A Spiritual Titan Honored - Mutumwa Paul Mwazha Declared National Hero
Article By: Oudney Patsika - Pastors Toolbox Staff
In a historic national announcement, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has conferred the prestigious status of National Hero upon the revered leader of the African Apostolic Church, Mutumwa Paul Mwazha. This highest honor places the 107-year-old clergyman amongst the most venerated figures in Zimbabwean history.
The Official Conferment
The official declaration was delivered by Nick Mangwana, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services. The statement read:
“MUTUMWA APOSTLE MWAZHA, A NATIONAL HERO. His Excellency President E.D. Mnangagwa has conferred National Hero status upon Mutumwa Apostle Paul Mwazha. Burial arrangements will be announced and guided by the family.”
A Shift in National Recognition
This decision by President Mnangagwa is viewed by political analysts as a reinforcement of a distinct approach to national honors. His administration has consciously broadened the criteria to be more inclusive of influential Zimbabweans from diverse fields, moving beyond the political and military sphere.
This marks a notable shift from the precedent set by the previous administration, where hero status was largely reserved for political stalwarts and liberation war veterans. The recognition of a prominent religious leader like Apostle Mwazha acknowledges that contributions to the nation's soul are as vital as contributions to its politics.
The Legacy of The Messenger
Mutumwa Paul Mwazha founded the African Apostolic Church, a church with a vast following across Zimbabwe and neighboring countries. Known to his followers as "Mutumwa" (The Messenger), his teachings and leadership have shaped the spiritual landscape of the nation for decades.
His advanced age did little to diminish the reverence in which he was held. His church remains a powerful social and religious institution. The announcement has been met with widespread celebration amongst his congregation, who see this as a fitting recognition of his immense contribution to peace, unity, and faith in Zimbabwe.
The National Heroes Acre
The declaration paves the way for Apostle Mwazha to be buried at the National Heroes Acre in Harare, a site reserved for those deemed to have rendered exceptional service to Zimbabwe. The family, in conjunction with the government, is expected to announce the specific burial details in the coming days.
