Apostle Andrew Wutawunashe: Faith, Philosophy, and 50 Years of Ministry
Founding Father of Zimbabwe Pentecostalism • Global Missionary • Author of "Dear Africa"
Curated by Pastors Toolbox, this is the definitive biography of Rev. Andrew Wutawunashe, a globally prominent Zimbabwean religious leader and missionary statesman. Celebrated as a pioneer in the history of Pentecostalism in Zimbabwe, Apostle Wutawunashe founded the Family of God Churches (FOG)—also known as Andrew Wutawunashe World Witness—over four decades ago. His ministry has since expanded into a vast global network, delivering a message of spiritual empowerment and divine revelation through Jesus Christ to thousands across the nations.
Beyond the pulpit, Andrew Wutawunashe is a renowned intellectual and the author of the groundbreaking book "Dear Africa," which serves as a spiritual manifesto for the continent. He is the architect of the "African Dream" philosophy, a transformative ideology that encourages self-reliance, creative achievement, and the reclamation of African identity. As a mentor to national leaders and a spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Indigenous Interdenominational Council of Churches (ZIICC), his enduring legacy continues to bridge the gap between faith and civic leadership.
Early Life & "Birth" as a Prophet
Student Activism & Exile
Apostle Wutawunashe's early years were marked by a fierce commitment to liberation. In 1974, he was detained for six months for political activism alongside future national leaders like Simba Makoni. Following his expulsion from the University of Rhodesia, he pursued his studies in Sierra Leone. It was here that he encountered the fervent fire of West African Pentecostalism, a movement that would forever alter the trajectory of his life.
The Prophetic "Call" & Break from Tradition
Abandoning a highly promising academic career, Wutawunashe answered God's call, returning to Zimbabwe to preach in schools and communities from 1975 to 1980. Originally a member of the Reformed Church in Zimbabwe (RCZ), he made a pivotal decision in 1982 to break away. Guided by deep prophetic inspiration, he stepped out in faith to birth an independent, Pentecostal ministry that would transform the spiritual landscape of Zimbabwe.
Ministry & Global Influence
Founding the Family of God (FOG)
Shortly after Zimbabwe gained independence in 1980, following years of religious revivals across the nation, Apostle Wutawunashe officially founded the Family of God Church. What began as a humble service with just 30 people in Harare exponentially grew into a massive global network with branches in numerous African nations, Australia, Russia, India, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the USA.
The African Revival & Global Conventions
He oversees a worldwide mandate appropriately named "The African Revival". This ministry has become famous for hosting major annual events that attract thousands globally, including the Southern Africa, Pan African and World Christian Churches Convention every December, and The Preaching of the Cross Convention during Easter.
Music Pioneers & Kingdom Infrastructure
An innovator in worship, Wutawunashe formed the Family Singers in 1981, widely recognized as the pioneers of contemporary gospel music in Zimbabwe. In 1983, the church acquired its first major asset, the Leopard Rock Hotel. The proceeds from its eventual sale funded monumental infrastructure projects, including the Bethel Mission and massive church halls in Masvingo and Bulawayo.
The African Dream Philosophy & Authorship
"Dear Africa" – A Continental Manifesto
Rev. Andrew Wutawunashe is a celebrated author, most notably for his groundbreaking 2011 book, "Dear Africa". The book serves as a spiritual and ideological manifesto for the continent, urging Black and African people worldwide to shake off historical disadvantages and confidently embrace their God-given identity.
Self-Reliance & Competitive Achievement
At the core of his teachings is the "African Dream". He emphasizes deep self-knowledge, self-reliance, and creative competitive achievement. Wutawunashe passionately encourages Africans to take charge of narrating their own history, shifting away from third-party perspectives, and rising to a place of significant global contribution.
Political Evolution & Civic Leadership
From Radical Outsider to Civic Anchor
Over four decades, his relationship with political power has seen a fascinating evolution. In the 1980s, Wutawunashe was perceived as a radical outsider, frequently clashing with activists who disrupted his crusades. By the 2000s, he emerged as a central figure in state-church relations, actively campaigning to declare Zimbabwe a Christian country.
National Platforms & ZIICC Leadership
As a significant figure in Zimbabwe’s civic life, he famously officiated the inauguration of former President Robert Mugabe in 2013. Furthermore, he serves as a leading spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Indigenous Interdenominational Council of Churches (ZIICC), frequently calling for national unity and mobilizing support for the government’s developmental agendas.
Public Scrutiny
His prominent role has not been without controversy. His pro-government stances in recent years have attracted sharp criticism from social justice advocates and traditional church bodies like the Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC), creating a robust public discourse on the role of the prophetic office in holding power to account.
Personal Life & Enduring Legacy
Family & Fatherhood
Apostle Wutawunashe is a proud father of six children and a grandfather of eight. Beyond his biological family, his counsel is widely sought by national leaders, academia, and everyday congregants, who celebrate him as a profound spiritual father and mentor.
Navigating Challenges
In 2016, Wutawunashe transparently announced his divorce from his wife of many years, Dr. Rutendo Faith Wutawunashe, following a decade of separation. This transition led to a significant schism within FOG, resulting in the formation of the Family Covenant Church (FCC). Despite these deeply personal challenges, his commitment to his global mandate has remained unwavering.
A Ministry of Power & Revelation
Today, Rev. Andrew Wutawunashe continues to travel the nations, communicating the Word of God in a deeply anointed and revelatory manner. Through his faithful preaching of the cross, thousands globally have experienced salvation, profound healings, deliverances, and divine interventions, lifting them to prosper and achieve in every field.
