The Weight of the Call: The Cost of Spiritual Leadership in Challenging Times

Written By: Apostle AJ Masiyenyama
Topic: Church Leadership & Spiritual Warfare

Pastoring in Africa, and in Zimbabwe in particular, is not for the faint of heart. It is a heavy, beautiful, and often exhausting balancing act. Today, I want to pull back the curtain on the man or woman behind the pulpit. The spiritual leader you see on Sunday carries burdens throughout the week that most congregations never witness.

Apostle AJ Masiyenyama - The Weight of the Call
Apostle AJ Masiyenyama | "They carry the weight of a hundred families while trying to balance their own."

From economic turbulence to the emotional whiplash of burying the dead and marrying the living in the exact same hour, the cost of the Divine Assignment is real. Here are the unspoken realities of leading a flock in these challenging times.

Navigating Exodus and the "Blitz" Culture

The socioeconomic climate dictates the spiritual atmosphere, forcing pastors to constantly shift between letting go and holding on.

The Paradox of Departure

Half the congregation is looking for the exit, desperate for a way to the Diaspora. They come to you to “pray them out.” The irony is heavy: you are interceding for their success, knowing that every answered prayer shrinks your membership. You understand their desperation, so you pray them away with a heavy heart, losing the very people you’ve poured your life into.

Preaching Hope in a "Blitz" Culture

For those who remain, you must preach hope while the environment screams hopelessness. From new taxes and road "blitzes" to sudden policy shifts and economic gymnastics, the list is endless. You become a professional hope-giver, and some days, you aren't even sure who you’re preaching to more—them or yourself.

The Private Battles Behind the Pulpit

The man of God is expected to be flawless, acting as the community's pillar while suppressing his own humanity.

The Duality of the Suit

People see the well-fitted suit and the polished shoes on Sunday. But often, those suits are covering "unsuiting" situations. Behind that smile is a leader navigating silent, fierce battles at home or in their private life—struggles they cannot vent about because they have to be the "pillar." The suit is ironed, but the heart might be heavy.

The Trauma of the Midnight Call

When disaster strikes—a sudden accident or a family tragedy—the Pastor is the first responder. You sit in the dust, holding hands and wiping tears. You also pick up the phone at 2 AM for the same people who ignored your counsel months ago. You don't say "I told you so"; you just help them pick up the pieces.

Emotional Extremes & Public Scrutiny

Pastoring requires an immediate, violent shift of emotions, all while dealing with audiences who only see the final product.

Whiplash of Emotions: Weddings & Funerals

One hour, you are standing at a colorful altar, dancing and celebrating with a glowing new couple. An hour later, you are standing by a dark grave, throwing the first handful of soil. You find yourself checking your phone in between wedding congratulatory speeches, sending scriptures to a grieving family. You have to switch from "Rejoice with those who rejoice" to "Weep with those who weep" in a matter of minutes.

The Silent Labor vs. The Online Critic

Despite this, people will still drag you online. People who have never sat with a weeping mother or stayed up all night in a hospital ward will reduce years of sacrifice to a few lines of criticism. They see the "platform," but they never see the "process."

The Cost is Real

Your Pastor shows up Sunday after Sunday with a smile, processing the last crisis while bracing for the next one. They carry the weight of a hundred families while trying to balance their own. The call is greater than the cost—but today, let’s acknowledge that the cost exists.

Take a moment to tag your Pastor below. Let them know you see them. Let them know you appreciate the strength it takes to lead in these times.
