A House Divided: The Inside Story of the Bitter 10-Year War Tearing Zimbabwe’s AFM Church Apart
For decades, the Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM) stood as a towering pillar of Zimbabwe’s Pentecostal movement. Today, it is a fractured institution bleeding in the secular courts. What began as a whisper of discontent over pastoral salaries and internal elections in 2015 has erupted into a catastrophic, decade-long schism defined by greed, fistfights over pulpits, and cutthroat legal warfare.
The recent August 2026 High Court ruling—which sensationally nullified the leadership of the breakaway faction’s president, Reverend Cossam Chiangwa—is merely the latest explosive chapter. To truly understand how a holy institution descended into chaos, one must look past the altar and into the boardroom, where disputed constitutions and millions in real estate sit at the heart of the holy war.

Frequently Asked Questions
The split was triggered by a fierce battle over constitutional reforms. The reformist faction wanted to centralize the corporate structure to fix disparities in pastors' salaries, while the traditionalist faction, led by Cossam Chiangwa, opposed the changes, viewing them as an unconstitutional power grab.
The Supreme Court of Zimbabwe ruled decisively in favor of the mainstream AFM in Zimbabwe led by Rev Amon Madawo. The breakaway faction, AFM of Zimbabwe, was ordered to return all seized assets, vehicles, and real estate.
High Court Judge Tawanda Chitapi ruled that Chiangwa's breakaway faction unlawfully altered their constitutional age limit from 65 to 70 years without following proper procedure. This illegal move was designed to allow over-age candidates (like Chiangwa) to contest the May 2025 elections.
The Hollow Victory of Secular Law
The decade-long disintegration of the Apostolic Faith Mission is a masterclass in institutional hubris. When the spiritual leaders of one of Zimbabwe's largest congregations cannot resolve disputes over salaries and property without resorting to hostile takeovers, property barricades, and secular Supreme Court battles, the moral authority of the church is bankrupt.
The bitter irony of the recent August 2026 High Court ruling is inescapable. Rev Cossam Chiangwa tore the original church apart in 2018 under the guise of protecting the constitution from manipulation—only to be humiliated in 2026 for unlawfully manipulating his own splinter faction's constitution to cling to power. While the courts have settled the legal boundaries of who owns the brick-and-mortar buildings, the profound emotional and spiritual trauma inflicted upon the ordinary, tithe-paying congregants is a wound no judicial gavel can heal.
