The Great Retraction: Pastor Enoch Adeboye Apologizes for ‘No Tithe, No Heaven’ Doctrine

In a move that has sent shockwaves through the global Pentecostal community, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the 82-year-old General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), has publicly retracted one of his most controversial teachings on tithing and salvation.

HISTORIC ADMISSION: Addressing the ongoing RCCG National Youth Convention on a Thursday, Pastor Adeboye described his past claims linking tithing to salvation as a "mistake," citing Hebrews 12:14 as the true biblical standard for entering God's kingdom.

The apology marks a rare moment of public self-correction by a high-ranking African prelate, putting an end to a six-year controversy stemming from a viral mandate that commanded pastors to preach that non-tithers would not enter heaven.

A Biblical Correction: "I'm Sorry, I Was Wrong"

The core of the address during the RCCG Youth and Young Adults (YAYA) convention was a direct confrontation with an old sermon from an April 2018 Holy Ghost Service that had recently resurfaced and gone viral.

Correcting the Scriptural Record:

"It's Not in the Bible" Addressing the young congregants, Adeboye explicitly stated: "I am going to apologise for making a mistake by saying that if you don't pay tithes, you might not make it to heaven. I’m sorry, that’s wrong, and it’s not in the Bible." This retracted his previous unyielding stance that painted tithing as a core requirement for eternal salvation.
Hebrews 12:14 Re-emphasized He clarified that salvation and making heaven are predicated on holistic Christian living. "What the Bible says is, 'Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see God,'" he explained, shifting the narrative back to the foundational tenets of the Christian faith.

A Highly Contested Subject in Nigerian Christendom:

The Abel Damina Catalyst Tithing has sparked immense debate recently. Popular cleric Pastor Abel Damina (Founder of Abel Damina Ministries International and CEO of Kingdom Life Network) made headlines on Nedu’s ‘Honest Bunch’ podcast. Damina argued that Jesus never paid or collected tithes, admitting he himself used to preach tithing but abandoned it upon deeper biblical study. Adeboye's apology lands right in the middle of this boiling cultural discourse.

"Right and Wrong Simultaneously"

To explain how a deeply respected spiritual leader could propagate an incorrect doctrine for years, Adeboye leaned heavily on his academic background as a scientist and mathematician.

The Scientific Analogy of Light Adeboye reasoned: "Now, let me tell you, it's possible to be right and wrong at the same time... I'm a scientist, and I know that for years we thought that light travels in a straight line... But later, we discovered that light travels in waves, going in one direction but in waves." He argued his previous stance was a limited view rather than a deceptive falsehood.
Protecting Spiritual Authority By utilizing this physics framework, he sought to preserve his credibility as a vessel of progressive revelation. He noted that even spiritual leaders are susceptible to human error and evolving understanding, teaching his followers that doctrine can undergo refinement.

Beyond 10%: The $50 Million Testimony

While the threat of missing heaven was decisively removed, the call for immense financial generosity was actually amplified, reframing the 10% tithe as merely a starting point.

10% is for Beginners (Voluntary Giving) Adeboye emphasized that giving should be entirely voluntary, remarking: "It is wrong to limit you to 10 per cent when some of you should be or want to bring 20, 30, and 40 per cent... 10 per cent should be for beginners."
The Kenneth Hagin Businessman Testimony To illustrate the power of advanced giving, Adeboye shared the story of a businessman who attended a Kenneth Hagin conference. Starting a company with just $500, the man promised God he would give 90% of his earnings instead of the standard 10%. According to Adeboye, within five years, the business had grown to a massive $50 million turnover.
The General Overseer's Personal Goal The testimony profoundly affected Adeboye's own financial life. He admitted that it encouraged him to continuously increase his giving percentage over the years. "I've not reached 90 per cent yet," he confessed to the youth, making it clear that he practices what he preaches regarding radical generosity.
Pragmatic Ministry: Balancing Romance and Spirituality This theological adjustment follows another practical pivot from the cleric. Just a month prior, in September, Pastor Adeboye made headlines by advising pastors to balance marital romance with their spiritual duties. Moving away from hyper-spiritualizing marriages, he revealed that the key to a lasting union is prioritizing intimacy and actively nurturing relationships, showing a broader trend of Adeboye delivering more practical, grounded teachings in his later years.

The Impact of the Great Apology

The 2024 retraction by Pastor Enoch Adeboye is a landmark moment in African church history. By admitting "I was wrong" on a global stage, he has introduced a refreshing level of transparency and accountability to the often rigid "Prosperity Gospel" landscape. His direct confrontation of an error spanning six years proves that even towering spiritual figures can refine their theology.

However, the pivot to "10% for beginners" and the 90% testimony suggests that while the legalistic fear of hell has been eradicated, the vision of exponential giving remains central to the RCCG's framework. Whether this apology heals the rift caused by the aggressive tithing mandates of the past remains to be seen. But the clear admission that a foundational prosperity doctrine is "not in the Bible" stands as a monumental victory for scriptural literalists, reformers, and grace-based theologians alike.
