Biblical Leadership: Why Strong Leaders Build People Instead of Controlling Them
That conviction has become a recurring theme in my teaching and writing: leadership is not primarily about control. It is about stewardship, responsibility, and multiplication. As I have written elsewhere: “The real measure of a man's leadership is not how many people he can control, but how many people can flourish under his leadership.” That principle extends far beyond marriage. It is a definition of Christlike leadership.
One of the easiest ways to identify weak leadership is through an obsession with control. The leader wants everyone to agree; everyone must follow instructions without question. Other people's success becomes threatening. Questions are interpreted as rebellion. Correction becomes humiliation. Disagreement becomes disrespect. But control is not the same as leadership.
Leadership Is Responsibility, Not Domination
Who is becoming wiser? Who is becoming more capable? Who can carry responsibility because I invested in them? A title gives you a position. Character gives you influence. Responsibility gives you credibility. Results give your leadership evidence. The goal of leadership is not simply to have people under you. It is to leave people stronger because they were under your leadership.
Secure Leaders Are Not Threatened by Capable People
This principle is especially visible in my teaching on marriage. A husband's leadership should not require his wife to become less capable, less ambitious, or less visible. Instead, her strengths should become part of the strength of the family.
As I have said: “The goal isn't a powerful husband and a weak wife. The goal is a strong family, built by strong husbands and strong wives.”
Great Leaders Create Room
A mature leader must be willing to have his assumptions tested and his thinking challenged. That requires humility. A leader who must always be the smartest person in the room will eventually limit the room. A leader who welcomes wisdom multiplies capacity.
Jesus Demonstrated Servant Leadership
Jesus had authority, but He did not use authority to crush people. He served. He taught. He corrected. He equipped. He sent people. He entrusted His disciples with responsibility. And He prepared them to continue the mission after His earthly ministry.
Biblical leadership is not about asking, “How much authority can I exercise?” It is about asking, “How much responsibility am I willing to carry?”
Your Leadership Should Produce Capacity & Results
One of the greatest failures in leadership is creating dependence. People are trained to wait for the pastor, the boss, or the leader. They wait for permission and for someone else to solve the problem. That is not multiplication.
A healthy leadership culture produces capacity. People learn to think, pray, decide, serve, solve problems, take responsibility, lead others, accept correction, and produce results.
Correction Should Build, Not Destroy
A leader must correct, confront, establish standards, and sometimes say no. But correction should have restoration as its objective. The purpose of correction is not to humiliate someone. It is to help them become better.
If people leave every conversation with you feeling crushed, ashamed, and afraid to try again, you should examine not only what you are correcting but how you are leading. Truth must be spoken, but truth should be used to build people, not destroy them.
Leadership Begins With Self-Leadership
You cannot consistently demand discipline from others while living without discipline yourself. You cannot preach integrity while compromising privately. You cannot demand excellence while producing mediocrity. You cannot ask people to take responsibility while constantly making excuses.
Leadership begins internally: Your prayer life, thinking, time, finances, relationships, words, habits, response to pressure, and willingness to learn. If you cannot govern your own appetites, emotions, words, and decisions, giving you authority over other people will not solve the problem—it will magnify it.

The Leadership Test: Are People Better Because I Lead Them?
Not because they fear you. Not because they need your approval. Not because they depend on you. But because your leadership has helped them discover and develop their God-given capacity. That is the standard.
Your wife should become stronger. Your children should become wiser. Your team should become more capable. Your church should become more mature. Your community should become better. Your leaders should eventually become leaders who can lead without you standing over them. That is not losing control. That is successful leadership.
For Body of Christ International Church (BCI), this creates a simple leadership framework: Lead. Build. Equip. Release. Multiply. The future of Christian leadership cannot be built around insecure leaders protecting their positions. It must be built around secure leaders who are willing to raise people who eventually become capable of carrying the assignment.
