Leaders who exploit their God-given authority to mistreat subordinates remain a recurring tragedy within the Body of Christ. Often, these individuals are themselves survivors of past abuse, unintentionally perpetuating a cycle of pain. This resource highlights the 12 most common signs of abusive leadership—not to fuel gossip, but to protect the flock and encourage urgent self-reflection and accountability among those in positions of spiritual authority.

12 Signs of an Abusive Leader
1. Uses Power for Personal Favors
They throw around their title to extract personal, often illicit, favors from subordinates, creating a transactional and impure dynamic.
2. Threatens and Manipulates
When they don’t get their way, they resort to political, monetary, or relational manipulation and threats to coerce submission.
3. Seeks Entitlement Over Service
They desire the perks of leadership without the sacrifice, viewing their position as a means to be served rather than to serve others.
4. Preys on the Vulnerable
They avoid confident, independent people and instead attach themselves to the naïve and vulnerable, who are easier to control and manipulate.
5. Exploits "Father Wounds"
They discern the need for paternal affirmation in those with absent or neglectful fathers, using it to gain trust and loyalty, which they later exploit for personal gain.
6. Isolates and Creates Dependency
They make subordinates emotionally, financially, or relationally dependent on them, isolating them from outside counsel to maintain absolute control.
7. Demands Absolute Loyalty
They feel threatened when subordinates seek help or counsel from others and demand to be the sole source of authority and guidance in their lives.
8. Slanders Those Who Leave
When someone becomes independent or leaves their circle, the abusive leader attempts to scandalize and slander them to limit their ability to succeed elsewhere.
9. Objectifies People for Their Agenda
They view people as a means to an end. Once they have extracted what they need from someone, they discard them and move on to the next person they can use.
10. Exhibits Rage and Violence
They have a short fuse and use fits of rage and intimidation to control subordinates and elicit obedience through fear.
11. Narcissistic and Self-Focused
Their leadership is a vehicle for ego-gratification. They are obsessively self-focused and will sacrifice others for their own aggrandizement and pleasure.
12. Is a Control Freak
Motivated by insecurity and fear, they demand robotic obedience, squash critical thinking, and would rather have mediocrity under their control than empower others to flourish independently.
A Word from the Toolbox
God gives dire warnings in Scripture to shepherds who feed themselves instead of the flock (Ezekiel 34). Effective leadership is not about control; it is about empowerment. It is our sacred duty to facilitate growth and maturity in those under our care. To avoid these toxic traits, we must cultivate a culture of respect, encourage open communication, promote transparency, and establish clear ethical guidelines. Above all, we must hold ourselves accountable to the same standards we preach, ensuring our pulpits are a source of life, not abuse.
