Legacy Beyond Structures: A 66-Year Anniversary Reflection on the Spiritual Architecture of ZAOGA and Ezekiel Guti
Authored by: Gabriel Manyati
As ZAOGA Forward in Faith Ministries International marks 66 years of existence this week, reflection becomes unavoidable, not merely on institutional longevity but on the meaning of legacy itself.
"In many religious movements, anniversaries tend to trigger celebration of buildings, institutions, schools, hospitals, universities, and global expansion... Yet the Bible demands a more searching question: what truly defines the legacy of a man of God?"
HONOUR THE SERVANT, WORSHIP THE MASTER
The legacy of Archbishop Ezekiel Guti must be understood primarily in spiritual and theological terms. His enduring impact lies not in bricks and mortar, but in the spread of Pentecostal spirituality, the emphasis on holiness, and the formation of a global community of believers.
Deconstructing The Legacy
It is important to acknowledge that ZAOGA’s institutional footprint is vast. However, history is filled with secular and non-Christian systems that have built hospitals and universities. Longevity alone cannot serve as proof of divine endorsement.
Evaluating Spiritual Fruit
Jesus declared, “Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them” (Matthew 7:20). The fruit in question is not institutional expansion, but transformed lives, repentance, holiness, and the advancement of the gospel.
Ezekiel Guti’s True Contribution
His most significant contribution is the spiritual awakening he catalysed. His ministry emphasised prayer, deliverance, and the Holy Spirit. In this sense, his legacy is deeply Pentecostal: experiential, revivalist, and centred on the pursuit of God.
One of the most subtle risks facing mature religious movements is the shift from Christ-centred faith to personality-centred devotion.
Disciples Belong to Christ Alone
Claims that believers are “disciples of Ezekiel Guti” may sound harmless, but they do not hold under Scripture. Jesus defined discipleship clearly: “If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed” (John 8:31).
Leadership is Not Ownership
“But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ” (Matthew 23:8). Preachers may have followers, students, and spiritual sons, but true belonging and submission belong to Jesus Christ alone.
There is an increasing tendency within some church contexts to rely heavily on the writings of founders as primary preaching material. This must never replace Scripture.
A Theological Aberration
Telling believers to “preach from baba’s books” is not a harmless cultural expression; it is a theological aberration. Guti’s books may be edifying and historically valuable, but they are not Scripture.
The William Branham Parallel
Church history warns us. In the movement of William Marion Branham, his sermons were functionally elevated alongside the Bible. What begins as honour ends as dependency, and what begins as admiration can mature into doctrinal captivity.
Guti's Own Warning
Guti himself told a friend—who was interviewing him for a book—that he hoped that after his death ZAOGA would not turn into a human-centred cult-like formation.
Religious slogans often serve as emotional anchors, but they can also become substitutes for genuine spiritual reflection.
"ZAOGA Haiperi"
The phrase expresses a desire for continuity. However, endurance alone is not a theological category of approval. The concern is not whether ZAOGA endures, but whether its members are walking in holiness and obedience to Christ.
The Kingdom Mandate
The true continuation of Ezekiel Guti’s legacy is not the repetition of his name, but the multiplication of disciples committed to Christ. As God told a teenage Guti: "FEAR NOT, SIN NOT."
A Call To Spiritual Maturity
As ZAOGA marks 66 years, the moment calls not only for celebration but for recalibration. The challenge is to move from institutional pride to spiritual depth, from slogans to holiness, and from personality reverence to Christ-centred devotion. The question is not whether ZAOGA endures, but whether its members are truly becoming disciples of Christ. That is the only legacy that heaven recognises.
