The Ascent of Janet Manyowa: A Decade of Defining Zimbabwe's Gospel Sound

In the modern era of Zimbabwean gospel music, few names carry the weight, consistency, and sheer artistic brilliance of Janet Manyowa. From a small-town choir girl in Chegutu to the reigning queen of contemporary worship, her ascent has been nothing short of spectacular.

A Decade of Excellence: Janet Manyowa has seamlessly blended world-class contemporary worship sounds with deep, resonant Shona lyricism.

Since her breakout in 2014, Manyowa has built an empire of anthems—from Zadzisa to Vaudze—that resonate across borders. She is a multi-time NAMA and ZIMA award winner, a chartered accountant, a devoted mother, and the visionary behind Zimbabwe's most anticipated annual gospel event, A Night of Thanksgiving (ANOT). Today, we trace the definitive history of a career that continues to shape the spiritual and cultural fabric of a nation.

The Executive Artist

What distinguishes Janet Manyowa in the highly competitive music industry is her formidable dual identity. Training as a chartered accountant at Ernst & Young, she has successfully fused corporate discipline with divine calling. Serving as the Board Treasurer of the Zimbabwe Music Rights Association (ZIMURA), she is not just setting the standard for vocal performance, but also for music business administration in Zimbabwe.

The Foundation & The Breakthrough (2014–2016)

Born on March 18, 1985, in Chegutu, Manyowa’s musical journey began under the tutelage of her parents, who enrolled her in music school at age ten. By 13, she had penned her first song, Mubatsiri.

Despite serving actively in the Celebration Choir under Pastor Bonnie Deuschle in Harare, Manyowa was initially reluctant to pursue a solo professional career. It took significant persuasion from family and friends for her to step into the recording booth.

"Amazing God" (2014)

In January 2014, she broke onto the scene with Amazing God, a duet with US-based Zimbabwean artist Dr. Comfort Manyame. Remarkably, the two recorded their parts separately, never meeting during the process. The track immediately showcased her distinct sound—a premium, Hillsong-inspired contemporary arrangement grounded in African authenticity.

King of Glory (2015)

She followed up with heavy-rotation singles like Ndomira Pamuri and Tarisa. In August 2015, she released her 12-track debut album, King of Glory. The industry response was swift and emphatic: she swept the 2015 Zimbabwe Music Awards (ZIMA), taking home both Best Newcomer and Best Female Artist.

The Golden Era: Grateful & Sounds of Victory (2017–2021)

If 2015 was her introduction, the period between 2017 and 2021 was her coronation. Manyowa transitioned from a promising newcomer to the undisputed voice of Zimbabwean gospel.

In 2017, she expanded her brand by launching Redeemed, a television talk show that highlighted stories of faith and featured industry leaders. But it was her music that continued to break new ground.

Grateful (2018) & The Zadzisa Phenomenon

Her sophomore album, Grateful, was launched at the Celebration Centre Auditorium with South African heavyweights Dr. Tumi, Ntokozo Mbambo, and Nqubeko Mbatha. The track Zadzisa became a national anthem, winning Gospel Song of the Year at the Star FM Music Awards.

Sounds of Victory & Continental Acclaim

Around 2020, she released Sounds of Victory, an album featuring massive hits like Vaudze and Many Blessings. The album earned her Best Female Musician and Album of the Year at ZIMA. More significantly, Many Blessings won the Best of Africa Song Award at the prestigious SABC Crown Gospel Awards, cementing her regional influence beyond Zimbabwe.

The ANOT Empire: Redefining Live Concerts

Beyond her studio recordings, Manyowa's greatest contribution to the local industry is arguably the establishment of the annual A Night of Thanksgiving (ANOT) concert.

Held typically on New Year’s Day at the massive Harare International Conference Centre (HICC), ANOT has become the definitive event for Christians to usher in the new year.

Selling Out the HICC

Over the years, ANOT has proven that gospel music can consistently fill the country's largest indoor arenas. The concert has hosted local legends like Charles and Olivia Charamba, Takesure Zamar Ncube, and Everton Mlalazi, alongside regional stars.

ANOT 2026: "Overflow"

The 2026 edition, themed "Overflow," featured Nigerian gospel giant Ada Ehi and South African vocal powerhouse Xolly Mncwango. Tickets sold out well in advance. During this event, she recorded live renditions of new hits, including the chart-topping Thank You Lord – Mwari Huyai.

The Modern Era: Live Worship & Continued Reign (2022–2026)

In recent years, Manyowa has leaned heavily into the live worship experience, capturing the raw spiritual energy of her performances while continuing to release highly polished studio projects.

Nenyasha & Worship Moments

In 2023, she released Nenyasha (featuring Nyasha neNgoni) and the live album Father's House (Live). This was followed closely in 2024 by Worship Moments (Open Heavens) and the milestone compilation 10 Years of Janet, marking a decade since her debut.

Grace Upon Grace (2025-2026)

In 2025, she recorded the live album Grace Upon Grace (Live) and went on to win the highly coveted Outstanding Female Musician at the 2025 NAMA awards. Even amid minor social media controversies regarding chart placements in early 2026, her industry peers—like Thembalami—publicly defended her undeniable capacity to fill arenas and dominate the charts through sheer merit.
