The Tithing Debate in Modern Ministry: An Apostolic Call for New Testament Grace, Freedom, and Foundational Unity
Money and religion are two of the most volatile topics in our modern discourse. Fierce debates over whether tithing is required in the New Testament often leave the Body of Christ divided. My intention is not to stoke the flames of controversy, but to provide a biblically founded, balanced middle ground that honors the high priestly prayer of Jesus: “that they may be one just as we are one.”
The Bible is not a legalistic book of "Dos AND Don'ts" meant to secure salvation or earn God's favor. It is a beautifully woven tapestry revealing a Creator who came to save humanity. Our response to God should be based on the light flooding our hearts, rather than a rigid checklist of human obligations.
Grace vs. Law: The Destructive Trap of Traditional Legalism
Reducing the rich landscape of faith to a rigid checklist of human obligations strips the Gospel of its power. Weaponizing church protocols to judge individual stewardship creates division, turning what should be a journey of devotion into an oppressive system of spiritual performance.
Christian thinker John Lennox points out that history should humble us. There was a time when the Church dogmatically insisted the Earth was the center of the universe based on Scripture. Science proved our interpretation was wrong, not the Bible.
The Toxic Paradox: Unmasking Anti-Tithing Legalism
It is a profound irony when movements fighting for liberty become oppressive. Condemning believers who choose to give ten percent as an act of personal devotion is simply legalism wrapped in a different cloak. True New Testament liberty allows room for diverse administrative convictions without forcing conformity through shame or intellectual condescension.
Legalism is not about the specific rule; it is a posture of the heart that believes outward behavior makes one spiritually superior.
Human beings love to make rules—even when they are making rules about being free! Rebranding legalism as "freedom" is still bullying wrapped in theological elitism.
The Romans 14 Blueprint: Balancing Grace, Freedom, and Devotion
True New Testament maturity is measured by our capacity to preserve peace amidst diverse convictions. By anchoring our communal health in the Romans 14 blueprint, we establish a sanctuary where grace outshines rules, enabling believers to express deep personal devotion without fear of structural ostracization or theological policing.
Choose Your Hills Wisely
The Core Principle of New Testament Giving
Though I personally follow the practice of tithing in my life, this practice must never become a doctrinal barrier to those actively seeking Jesus. Biblical stewardship is measured by the posture of the heart, not a rigid collection framework. To be clear: Is a tither violating grace? No. Is a radically generous non-tither violating Scripture? A definitive, unconditional no.
Christ’s urgent mandate was always to pray for harvest laborers, never to police an individual's financial giving percentages. Let us move past divisive debates and champion the true weightier pillars of the Christian faith: unconditional justice, deep-seated mercy, active kingdom faith, and authentic love.
Apostle AJ Masiyenyama & Living Tabernacles Church
An overview of apostolic governance, prophetic dynamics, and regional transformation. Explore the foundational pillars, spiritual heritage, and strategic kingdom mandates driving this dynamic move of God across the nation.
Apostle AJ Masiyenyama is the Visionary Founder of Living Tabernacles Church and a transformative voice within the contemporary Zimbabwean Apostolic Reformation. His global Christian Ministry is built upon an uncompromising culture of honor, anchoring its operations within the authentic spiritual lineages and leadership footprints of pioneering generals Apostle Alfred Jaka and Apostle Pride Sibiya.
His signature theological framework, masterfully articulated as "The Law of the Signal," redefines how the modern church conceptualizes Divine Revelation. This prophetic teaching posits that supernatural indicators from the Holy Spirit are not mere coincidences, but act as a formal "Legal Summons" from God, granting structural clearance for believers to advance into new seasons of breakthrough.
Operating strategically from the expanding spiritual hub of Marondera, Apostle Masiyenyama has secured a vital Regional Stronghold for the propagation of the Gospel in Zimbabwe. His highly attended "Miracle Sundays" and annual Christian Conferences serve as critical alignment grounds for sustainable kingdom building and leadership development across geopolitical boundaries.
