Heartbreak at Marapura Grounds: Council Demolishes Christ Embassy, UFIC, and Apostle Kathumba’s Churches
For many believers, a church building is not just a structure of brick, steel, and canvas; it is a spiritual home, a sanctuary built through the sacrificial giving and hard work of the congregation. Today, that sanctuary was reduced to rubble for hundreds of congregants in Mufakose.
The sight of heavy machinery pulling down church sheds has reopened old wounds regarding land regularization in Harare. While the council asserts it is merely enforcing municipal by-laws regarding illegal structures, congregants are left grappling with massive financial losses and a deep sense of spiritual displacement.
The Morning the Bulldozers Came
The council targeted structures and sheds situated at Marapura Grounds, a known community space in Mufakose that has housed several church assemblies over the years.

Watching their place of worship being destroyed is a traumatic experience for believers who view the church as their ultimate safe haven. The community reaction was raw and deeply emotional.

The Mufakose demolitions instantly triggered traumatic memories for other residents who have endured similar council crackdowns in the past.
Balancing the Law with Compassion
The demolition of the Christ Embassy, UFIC, and Apostle Kathumba structures at Marapura Grounds highlights a painful friction between urban administration and spiritual communities. From a civic standpoint, the City Council has a mandate to enforce zoning laws and prevent the proliferation of unregularized structures. Land barons and illegal allocations have historically created chaotic urban landscapes that municipalities are desperately trying to correct.
However, the methodology of these corrections often lacks basic humanity. Churches are not mere commercial enterprises; they are the social and spiritual fabric of high-density suburbs like Mufakose. They provide counseling, youth programs, and a refuge for the vulnerable. When bulldozers arrive unannounced to crush a building funded by the sweat and tithes of struggling citizens, it registers as a profound, personal bereavement—as one resident agonizingly put it, like losing a spouse.
Moving forward, there must be a bridge of dialogue. Church administrations must prioritize securing proper, regularized land tenure before erecting costly structures to protect the investments of their congregants. Conversely, local authorities must engage in transparent dialogue and offer alternative regularization paths for churches, rather than resorting to ambush demolitions that shatter the spirits and pockets of the community.
