Sinach's Story: How Nigeria's Gospel Star Conquered the World with Way Maker!
Written by: Oudney Patsika | Editor-in-Chief: Pastors Toolbox
Osinachi Kalu Okoro Egbu, known to the world simply as Sinach, is not just a gospel artist; she is a global phenomenon. With over 200 songs, more than a dozen studio albums, and a catalog that has united millions across continents, her voice has become the definitive soundtrack of modern Christian worship.
Her journey from a young choir member in Nigeria to a multi-award-winning international icon is a masterclass in tenacity, divine timing, and raw talent. As she prepares to headline the monumental ARISE with SINACH concert in Harare this August, we take a definitive, in-depth look at her biography, her monumental musical contributions, and the record-breaking achievements that have cemented her legacy.
A Legacy Forged in Worship
Sinach’s impact transcends traditional gospel music. Her songs do not merely entertain; they minister healing, hope, and encouragement. "Way Maker," her magnum opus, broke cultural and linguistic barriers, becoming the undisputed global anthem of hope during the 2020 pandemic. Her story proves that authentic artistry, grounded in deep conviction, can reshape the global music industry.
The Foundation: From Physics to Praise
Sinach’s beginnings were far from the glamorous stages she now commands. Her path was shaped by a unique blend of scientific education and an undeniable spiritual calling.
Born on March 30, 1973, in Ebonyi State, Eastern Nigeria, Sinach is the second daughter in a family of seven children. Her parents served as her earliest role models; she credits her father for her tenacity and deep love for people, and her mother for her organizational wisdom and visionary mindset.
A Background in Science
Interestingly, Sinach’s academic background is rooted in the sciences. After obtaining her WAEC certificate from her village in Ebonyi State, she attended the prestigious University of Port Harcourt in Rivers State, Nigeria, where she studied and graduated with a degree in Physics.
The Early Melodies
She began singing for family and friends in 1989 as a mere hobby. By the age of 19, she had started writing her own songs. Despite facing initial disapproval from her father, who saw no viable future in a musical career, Sinach held firmly to childhood dreams where she saw herself singing to massive crowds.
The Crucible: Ministry and Mentorship
Following her university education, Sinach briefly considered relocating from Nigeria to seek greener pastures. It was the intervention and guidance of Pastor Chris Oyakhilome that altered the trajectory of her life.
From Admin Staff to Worship Leader
Sinach joined Christ Embassy (Believers Loveworld) not as an international superstar, but as an administrative staff member and regular choir participant. Pastor Chris identified her profound anointing and began asking her to lead worship before his teachings. His consistent words of affirmation built the immense confidence she exudes today.
Personal Milestones
She served as a senior worship leader at Loveworld until 2021. In her personal life, she married Joseph Egbu in June 2014 at Christ Embassy in Ikeja, Lagos. In November 2019, Pastor Chris joyfully announced the arrival of Sinach's first child, Amyoli Mbilase, during the LIMA Awards.
The Discography & The "Way Maker" Era
Sinach has penned over 200 songs and released 12 studio albums. She adopted the stage name "Sinach" from her birth name, Osinachi, noting it was "easy to pronounce and catchy." Her debut album, Chapter One, was officially released in 2008.
A Prolific Output
Her vast discography includes landmark albums such as I'm Blessed (2011), Shout it Loud (2012), From Glory to Glory (2013), Waymaker - Live (2016), and Greatest Lord (2021)—the latter featuring collaborations with international heavyweights like Darlene Zschech, Nathaniel Bassey, and Leeland.
While songs like "I Know Who I Am" and "Awesome God" established her continental dominance, the 2015 release of "Way Maker" catapulted Sinach into the global stratosphere.
Breaking the Internet
The visuals for "Way Maker" became the second most-watched Nigerian music video on YouTube. In March 2019, it became the third Nigerian video to surpass 100 million views.
The Pandemic Anthem
"Way Maker" has been covered by over 60 Christian artists globally, including Michael W. Smith and Bethel Music. During the grueling COVID-19 lockdowns of 2020, it became the de facto anthem of comfort, sung in hospitals and parks worldwide. It claimed the No. 1 position on the CCLI Top 100 chart, making it the most played song in US Churches in 2020.
Record-Breaking Global Achievements
Sinach’s trophy cabinet reflects her status as a pioneer who shattered the glass ceiling for African gospel artists globally.
Billboard & GMA Dove Awards
In May 2020, Sinach made history as the first African artist to top the Billboard Christian Songwriters chart, maintaining the position for 12 consecutive weeks. Later that year, she became the first Nigerian to win the Song of the Year at the 51st GMA Dove Awards.
Global Recognition & Tours
She has toured over 50 countries. In 2019, she became the first African gospel artist to tour India, headlining massive arenas. In 2017, she received a Bethlehem Hall of Faith certificate in Israel, and in 2021, she was officially recognized by the US Congress while on tour in the United States.
Continental Dominance
Domestically and across Africa, her accolades include the LIMA Songwriter of the Decade (2016), African Achievers' Award for Global Excellence, Western Africa Artist of the Year (Groove Awards), and being named PulseNg's No.1 female artiste of the decade in 2019.
Witness History in Harare
Sinach’s journey from a young physics student in Port Harcourt to a Billboard-topping, Congress-recognized global worship leader is a testament to unwavering faith and dedication. Her songs have not only broken records; they have mended hearts.
Zimbabwean audiences will have the rare opportunity to experience this anointed ministry firsthand. Join Sinach, alongside local heavyweights Janet Manyowa, Minister Ellard Cherayi, Sharon Cherayi, and the Joyfull Praise Choir, at the ARISE with SINACH concert on August 22, 2026, at the Celebration Centre Auditorium in Harare.
